Week 2: Creating a Blog with Blogger

This week, we're asking yinz to create a blog (thing # 2!) Blogs are becoming more and more important in the world of media and information sharing. Check out wikipedia's explanation of blogs to see just how powerful they can be! Below is a quick and dirty guide to setting up a blog on Blogger. Just press play and follow along!

Also, check out this explanation of blogging from the CommonCraft Show.

Now, it's your turn! This week's discovery exercises:
  • create a blog on blogger (To view your blog: Your blog address is http://(xxxx).blogspot.com, (xxxx)=the unique name of your blog. Be sure to also write down your blog address. Make this blog a special 23Things blog to use for just posting about your experience on this project.
  • write a post about your experience so far with 23Things. Is it intimidating? Do you feel connected? Are you feeling lost? Anything! You'll be using this blog to track your progress.
  • register your blog by leaving a comment on the week 2 post at the 23Things-n'at blog with your blog's address and your name and library. The planning team will be keeping tabs on how everyone's doing, providing encouragement, answering questions and so on so we need to make sure we know where your blog lives. We're also going to ask you (in week 3) to subscribe to 10 23Things Participants' blogs but don't worry about that just yet.
  • have fun!
IMPORTANT NOTE: How you choose to identify yourself on your blog is your choice. You can blog under a screen name, anonymously, or as yourself.

For more fun stuff on blogging, go to the 23Things-n'at wiki page on week 2.

  1. Well, this was an easy exercise for me. I already have a blog: http://suzy-ruskin.blogspot.com. I have had one for a little while and I enjoy writing posts when I have time, but I don't think many (if any) read them! It is more a cathartic event for me, but still a very useful skill to have.

Geez, Kelley - don't you hate having to re-explain the assignment to us "difficult" students?! So, in my on-going search for perfection (yeah, right!) I've created a second blog that you might find interesting: http://whereintheworldarewegoing.blogspot.com/

  47. One thing I'd like to point out - these exercises are for fun and discovery - if you find, as you're working along, that blogging is NOT the right tool for you or your library, that is perfectly okay. The 2.0 police are not going to come in and take away your hipster librarian cred if you decide, ultimately, that blogging does not serve you or your patrons.

    Just sayin'.

    I Started late -
I find the weekly instructions go in so many different directions at once, and there's a back and forth that makes it hard to see if you've actually gotten through that week's coverage -- it all took definitely more than an hour each week if you read the info, watch the videos or tutorials, etc....
. With so many interests and so little time, I find it a bit hard for me to follow each "unit?" , without a real clear flow as I would prefer personally. But, I also like the wealth of info. available, so not sure how to make it more helpful structurally.

I know my 1st blog and this comment are too long for most blogs, but I am writing this from vacation, and tried a combination of "why I'm late" and a stream-of-consciousness on beginning this experience.
I had fun trying out color changes from the standard template, but did not experiment a lot with bells and whistles as I would if I were doing this for a blog for the library.

    My "First Ever" Blog
A few years ago, I started to learn Italian. I felt overwhelmed with all the unfamiliar words and tenses. When I heard the words spoken, I didn't comprehend them and struggled at completing a thought even one as simple as, "I do not understand Italian". I could compare these feelings with those I had learning the first 23 Lessons. In order to keep up with the changing technology, I knew I had to put extra effort into these lessons because this was something that did not come naturally. The miriad of terms such as vlog, tumblelog, phlog and blogosphere were definitely not part of my vocabulary and I started to put up a mental block to this new information. Questions raced through my head, like.... "Will I ever catch up to the techno-savy kids on my Teen Advisory Board?" All of sudden however, I saw an article in the news paper about "Twitter" and I realize that I had seen that term before and I knew it was not a new kind of candy bar. Slow but sure I am catching on to this new terminolgy and technology. This is all about "life long learning" and being able to get out of your comfort zone .... even if it is a little bit scary.
