Week 1: Welcome to 23 Things n'@

This is it! The first week of 23 Things n'@. We're thrilled (and a bit overwhelmed) that more than 280 people signed up for the program. It's a lot of pressure, but we're looking forward to your thoughts and contributions.

For the first week's exercise, we're going to start things off nice and slow. All you need to do is spend some time reading the blog (thing #1) and visiting the related links. Be sure to check out Beth Mellor's slide show on Lifelong Learning and Resiliency and the other links we've provided. To help you get started take the following quiz to find out what kind of "learner" you are! It's only 24 questions and you can complete it in 2 minutes.

Once you've checked everything out, take a few minutes to share the results and your impressions in the comments section. To add a comment, click on the "comment" link below. We use the comments to keep track of participation; be sure to include your first name and the name of your library. Feel free to respond to others comments.

  1. Not much of a shock to me (or others in my life!) but I am an intrapersonal learner. Coming in 2nd - verbal linguistic and 3rd - interpersonal. So I am good at self-managing, setting my own goals and meeting them. (Wow, if only that translated to my personal life!) I'm also best when learning with words, talking and stories. What's hard is that a lot of the world doesn't run this way. Therein is the challenge! Good to keep these in mind when I'm facing a difficult learning challenge. Like when I recently tried to learn the open software, Drupal on my own from a book. Needless to say it did NOT work!

  2. Test confirmed that I am a verbal and linguistic learner. I also learn better on my own, so this is a good way for me to gain some knowledge. I thought the slides moved a bit fast as I wasn't done reading and digesting one before it moved on to the next slide.

  3. I too am an intrapersonal learner, but I am also naturalistic and verbal linguistic. I think this is a fine mix for a librarian. I can self-manage, appreciate the flora and fauna of patrons surrounding me and I can write about it! I think my organizational skills get a little crazy sometimes. I am all about task lists and calendars, but I usually don't forget appointments. I really enjoy things better when they are planned than spontaneous, but I do not freak out when my plans are changed or don't work out as I thought. For someone so planned, I am very laid back about the outcome. I do love learning new things! I hope to learn some new things here and am always up for the challenge of straining my brain.

  4. Apparently I am a verbal-linguistic learner, which means that I absorb information through words both spoken and read. I suppose it makes sense that I became a librarian - now I am surronded with words.

Coming in second is Naturalistic, which means I learn through observation. While I'm not really the nature type, I do learn through watching and then doing so I suppose that makes sense as well.

I had a tie for third: Musical, Interpersonal and Logical-Mathematical. The remaining modes of learning were close behind. It just goes to show that learning is accomplished many different ways and no one way should ever be discredited.

  5. I am definately a hands-on learner--and practice is everything. The hardest for me is having to do somthing once, and then try to remember how to do it again weeks later with no practice in between. That's why I always ask for time on the front desk--repitition, repitition.

I have certainly been to the valley of chaos--who hasn't. While I am never shy about voicng opinions or strategies, I do have a fear of buttons--pressing the wrong button and watching technology implosion. Goal--blog for Whitehall's NF book group. We are also talking Tweets--

Not surprisingly I got logical/mathematical as my highest result (given that my thought processes are usually extremely logical and thought out), with musical coming in 2nd (I play the piano).

  7. My top learning style is logical-mathematical followed by verbal-linguistic. Not surprising for a cataloger who loves to get lost in a good book.

  8. Hmmm. Maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet. I didn't come out extremely strong or weak in anything. Kind of "flat lined." The ones I was stronger in only fit me a bit. Maybe since I'm a Geminii I do have different strengths at home than I do when I sit down in front of the kids for Storytime. As soon as the first child steps into my space, I come alive, wake up and feel better. I may be an "observer" to learn but I'm most comfortable in a large group of children, not adults.

  9. My learning style is both interpersonal and intrapersonal followed by verbal-linguistic and naturalistic. Must admit it is true - and I always find myself torn between external and internal learning cues. The naturalistic is the way I recharge!

  10. I am a Verbal-Linguistic Learner which makes sense because I usually ask tons of questions in order to understand something more clearly. I also tell stories in order for myself and others to understand what I'm talking about.

  14. I'm a verbal-linguistic learner, and also scored higher on interpersonal relations. My bodily-kinesthetic score was low, as I guess I wasn't that enthusiastic about the situations the quiz offered that I measured. I definitely like to tell stories. :-) That was my favorite question.

Very cool quiz. I scored highest on the naturalistic, followed closely by verbal-linguistic and intrapersonal learning styles. Makes sense that I would enjoy both the active learning by doing style, while also being heavily influenced by words and introspection.

  21. It's a good thing that I am an interpersonal learner because I had to ask somone how to find the quiz. My purple"quiz" faded to grey before I clicked on it. My second was verbal-linguistic so I guess I am in the right business. It would be no surprise to anyone who has ever heard me try to sing that musical was my worst. Very insightful quiz! 32. Wow - we're only halfway through the first day, and look how many comments are up already! Way to go, early adopters! It's really neat to read everybody's different styles - wish we could comment on all the comments, especially since we have seem to have a bunch of musicians - perhaps a countywide library band is in order?

I scored highest on intrapersonal, with verbal/written right behind. This does not surprise me, as I am kind of shy about getting to know people/working in groups, and usually express myself better in writing than in person, at least until I've hung around with the folks in question about 30 times. So, I'm looking forward to having 279 penpals! ;)

  33. I like the quiz too! I seem to have a lot learning styles. My strongest score was in Musical, followed by Verbal-linguistic. I had two ties after this, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal were only one point apart, and I tied exactly on Naturalistic and Bodily-kinesthetic. The other two scores were below 50 percent.

  34. My strongest scores were in Intrapersonal (69) and Verbal Linguistic (67). I am not surprised by this. I find that I learn best being reflective and working by myself. I learn more from the written word than the spoken word, however. Despite this, I enjoy communicating with others.

  35. I scored highest as a Naturalistic Learner (not surprising as every aptitude test I ever took thought I should be a forest ranger), but as someone else said, I never thought of it as a learning style. I’ll need to think about that for awhile. Logical-mathematical and Intrapersonal learning styles followed. They fit. I’m looking forward to the “23 things” series. It sounded so good back when Charlotte-Mecklenberg started it, but there was no time! There still isn’t, but now I need to just do it. Thanks for offering it.

  44. My highest score was Naturalistic. I agree with some of the previous posts that it's not something you'd generally think of as a "learning style." Yes, I'm interested in nature and I love animals, but I honestly can't remember ever trying to "imagine the new material as an ecosystem" to figure it out. My next highest scores of Verbal-Linguistic and Intrapersonal seem to be more accurate in regards to how I personally learn.

  47. Not surprisingly, I am mostly a linguistic/verbal learner with a strong intrapersonal and interperson. Seemingly weird-- although not really since I'm pretty aware of how I learn-- I'm also a bodily kinesthetic learner. It seems counterintuituve because I'm not very physically oriented. Drop dead last is visual-spatial, again, no surprise since I'm directionally challenged and would get lost making my way out of a paper bag. What always works best for me is a demonstration, detailed instructions and someone close by to consult with until a skill becomes second nature. I can learn pretty fast that way. Lets see if 23 Things will work!

  51. As anyone who has ever worked with me for any length of time can attest, I burst into song at the drop of a hat. Almost anything that anyone says in front me can make me sing an existing song, an existing song with adapted lyrics, or a song with my own words *and* melody (I'd have to confess that's the absolute worst for those within hearing distance). Now when people who don't know me well get wide-eyed when beholding the spectacle, I'll just explain that I'm a musical learner!

  55. I always have trouble with these quizes--I tend to chose the middle option too much. Anyway, I scored interpersonal highest, then linguistic. Two of my lower scores: kinesthetic and visual should actually be much higher.

I am a highly visual learner--however, I do not visualize things well in my head--things need to be written down for me to remember them. I am linguistic--but again, if they are written it is easier for me. And I definitely learn by doing--although my muscle memory is awful--so I don't like dancing or sports.

  58. So I guess I was the only one who had trouble finding the page that explained what these categories meant. I'm sure that says something about my learning style.
We did a similar, simpler evaluation at a recent PaLA conference. There was only one question: when you need to learn a new computer function, what works best: reading the manual, having it explained by someone else or figuring it out yourself. Responses broke us down into visual, aural and kinesthetic learners. Having something explained by a person works best for me, which was a surprise. I'd have guessed that reading was the best choice. Live and learn, one way or another. (Let this serve as fair warning--I may be calling on my friends for explanations.)

  63. So I took the quiz yesterday and printed my results so I could look them over and I lost them. (I think I needed the back for scrap paper) I know I was a naturalistic learner, which didn't surprise me much - I worked as a Park Ranger before I became a librarian. When I took the quiz for the second time I got totally different answers. This time it told me I am a verbal-linguistic learner, which isn't true at all. Maybe it just depends on the mood you are in when taking the quiz? I had fun doing it though!

  87. They need to come up with a special quiz just for parents. Our free time is spent a lot differently than normal people's. How much time do you spend...
Instead of "Getting lost in a good book": Getting out of reading Wacky Wednesday for the 500th time.
Instead of "Doing crafts": Doing anything with anything except pipe cleaners and googly eyes.
Instead of "Trying to solve mysteries": How did that paint-colored footprint get on the shower curtain?
Instead of "Writing a journal": Making plans to organize and/or print out all those photos.

Instead of "Reflecting on your life": Obsessing over your kid.
Instead of "Playing sports": Fishing the wiffle ball out of the neighbor's pool. Again.

Instead of "Yearning to spend time with nature": Yearning to watch a 90-minute DVD the whole way through.
    That kind of quiz.
    Thanks for the space!

Why the heck do I keep ending up at the profile page? 94. First, I'm very pleased to see that the 23 things are being offered, to all staff and at all levels. :) Can't wait to see what's coming!
Not surprising that after taking the quiz, I scored a 100% in the Interpersonal style. I would hope so since my job requires standing up in the front of a room of people on a regular basis! Verbal-Linguistic and Naturalistic tied for second. I agree with the earlier comment that the quiz asked 'what you do' as opposed to 'what you'd like to have time to do more of'. I think I would have scored higher on the Visual-Spatial in that case.

Verbal-linguistic and interpersonal scores were my highest in the quiz so my career choices - English teacher and school librarian - were definitely the right ones and brought me much pleasure. I love being out among the patrons and co-workers as a charge-out clerk in one library and a serials cataloger in the other.

As a recent college graduate, I have taken several of these tests throughout the years in many different capacities ("What Color is your Crown," "What Does Your Hair Color Say About Your Learning Style," etc.). I definitely feel like they are an excellent way to get a feel for what kind of person you are and how you interact with others, whether they are like you or the complete opposite. 197. Interesting how there are so many/varies ways to divide up learning styles tests. Re-watched the video recommended on lifelong learning. Always have been an eager supporter of that at home as well as work.
Comments on my results: My learning styles results: Interpersonal 88, Naturalistic 83, Verbal-linguistic 75, Musical 69. My weakest was no surprise, visual spatial only 8 percent.
I recognized my preference for interpersonal and verbal-linguistic styles. Maybe my naturalistic is somehow linked to my preference for nonfiction and for hands-on? I do love animals, but wasn't sure how that fit into learning styles per se..
Problem noted – Although my key learning style is identified as interpersonal, and I do love group sharing, learn by asking questions, prefer mentor/etc... HOWEVER, I am NOT “understanding and in tune with the people around you and their motives, emotions, perspectives, and moods.” – I try and would like to be, but somehow I do NOT, and have never, read body language well, and /or always understand when people try to tell me things. I appreciate it when people talk to me directly, candidly. I strongly prefer open, but sympathetic, conversations. These can take time when I am trying to understand or to convey info-- as I rely heavily on verbal-- and generally am more interested in details/intensity into a subject/topic, etc. than most people are willing to engage in or to take time for. I am a poor mind/body language reader, and cannot see behind literal words people tell me many times.
