Your next tasks, should you choose to accept them, are to read the information below on RSS and social bookmarking, and participate in the discovery exercises therein.
Part I: RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
RSS is a digital tool that brings news to you so that you don't have to visit countless websites individually. Click here for a slideshow tutorial on just how the magic works; those of you who are visual learners may prefer the following video:
Ready to find out what your fellow explorers are blogging about? Choose a newsreader, sign up for an account, and subscribe to at least one feed (thing #3). Feel free to subscribe to your fellow adventurers' blogs whose links are found here - other suggestions, both work-related and not-so-much, are also available through the Week 2 wiki page.
Part II: Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is the fancy name for using web-based tools to organize your links and info. It's not unlike bookmarking links on your computer, but with the added bonus of being able to access those links again from any computer with internet access. So if you've moved your feet and lost your seat, you won't have to redo your searches, or wrack your brain trying to remember whether the address of that really cool site you found had an underscore or a tilde in the URL.
Roll that beautiful social footage, there, CommonCraft...
Now that you're in the know, it's time to sign up for a del.icio.us account and add a few links (thing #4). If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to explore tagging and/or adding other users to your network. - see the support materials on the Week 3 wiki page for more details.
Remember to leave a comment on this entry (week #3) so that you can get credit for completing the assignment. In your comment you should briefly discuss your experiences signing up for a newsreader, and share your del.icio.us username.
As ever, let us know what questions you have, and how we can help.
Part 1. Had this assignment done months and months ago, and didn't even know it. I'm an RSS addict.
ReplyDeletePart 2. jessb83 on del.icio.us... This I am less familiar with, so it should be fun to play around with.

This week my brain hurts working on this assignment. I was really confused about getting feeds from other 23 bloggers because I could just "add feed" which meant it would go right onto my work computer (not what I had intended). Finally, I realized being a "follower" is what needed to happen. It was confusing. I'll work on part two when my brain recovers.
ReplyDeletewell, i've been using google reader for quite a while now, so the rss part is covered...i even have a subscription to this odd little blog called "library alchemy."
ReplyDeleteas for delicious, i offer you the neglected film and audio account: http://delicious.com/filmandaudio
i had to recover the password so i could add a few new links to prove to you fine people that i know what i'm about!

RSS is in the bag. I have been doing that for a while now. Now the social bookmarking is something new for me. I have heard of it but just never clicked that click. Honestly, I use the same computer most of the time and favorites work o.k. for me. I can see that I would use it more if I were more mobile. The signing up experience was easy and I imported my favorites in a flash. My new account is suzy24. Hope every week goes this smooth. :)
ReplyDeleteAmy - whoops - my bad - is there anybody else in the building who has a del.icio.us account? Brain like a sieve...
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the RSS is mostly not a brain-breaker. You know where to find us if you need us...
I found the RSS bit very confusing, particularly the purpose of it.
ReplyDeleteMy delicious account is samccarthy1

Tried them both and had no trouble setting them up. I did a complete profile so people can find me. My userid is slasher20412. If u need any other information, let me know. I'm Linda Scott at the Penn Hills Library. The videos were a big help to me. I had one error because I had IE open elsewhere but I was able to recover.
ReplyDeleteI completed the RSS and the delicious accounts, and though I mainly stick to one computer (like Suzy) I think this could be very useful when going mobile. I had never even heard of delicious, so that was cool to learn. I found the little video tutorials very helpful and entertaining!
ReplyDeleteMy delicious user name is Kara718, found by typing delicious.com/Kara718. Is there another way to check out other people's delicious accounts once you're within the site?
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing about del.ic.ious is that now I can access things I like from both home and work. It is totally annoying to bookmark something @ work then you can't find it on your home computer or when you;re mobile. Thumbs up to everyone who completed the exercise - now time to give your brains a well needed rest!
ReplyDeleteKara, it's the one drawback, in my opinion, of del.icio.us: you can search for and browse tags, but not users (at least, not as far as I can tell!). Once you know somebody's username, though, you can add them to your network, which will lead you to other people you might find interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhoops - again, brain like a sieve - remind me to post that Chicago Tribune article about people's brains and long novels...
ReplyDeleteWhat I was going to say was, the main purpose of RSS is to bring things to you in one place. Instead of checking 20 websites all the time to see if there's new content, putting them in an RSS reader will let you log in once and see right away which blogs/sites/etc. have new content, and which don't. Saves tons of time.
I haven't started subscribing to things yet but I agree with Natalie that my brain sort of hurts. I will do more exploring when I have all the instructions sorted out.

Done and done. Hard to believe, but I had already set up an account on Google Reader and Delicious. My user name is visneskyh- I'd like to choose a clever user name, but I'm too old and I'd forget it by tomorrow. Anyway, I added some new subscriptions and bookmarks; now I just have to remember to check these accounts more often and use them instead of bookmarking on individual computers.

I had never heard of delicious before but now that I've been introduced to it, I feel it will be very helpful when traveling. In hindsight I should have gotten my bookmarks in better order "before" I transferred them, but why start doing things the easy way now? My screen name in delicious is "edingerm".
ReplyDeleteRSS also seems to have the potential for time-saving convenience. I still feel like I need to play around with both to refine my use of them.

ReplyDeleteI have just set up Google Reader as my homepage. I don't really read news or blogs online--mostly I just read webcomics. However, this might encourage me to keep up with news a bit better--and I might start reading some blogs again as well (thanks for the suggestions!).
ReplyDeleteI have also set up Delicious. I don't really like sidebars on my screen, but maybe it will grow on me...

I am highly entertained by the new pretty buttons for Delicious that are now on my Firefox browser :) I am WAY too easily distracted by buttons, but it does make it easy and convenient to use the application.

Wall Wall Wall.I'm on vaycay this week, but I'm so OCD i had to do my homework before we head out on the road.I was able to watch the slide show for the RSS, which I had used before with Yahoo browser and Firefox, but I used Google Reader to subscribe to Lyrasis Podcast. I also signed on for Kelly B's I heart String Cheese Blog, Pop goes the Library through add a URL on Blogger and eleventh stack through the list of blogs you posted.I watched the video for social bookmarking. i hadnt used dekicious before so that was fun discovering and tagging sites that appealed to me relating to music and poetry. my delicious user name is pvmay3. my url for delicious is

I heart RSS and social bookmarking. I've added all those who shared their delicious user name and my own, if you'd like to add me (I have a million and 3 bookmarks!) is afewsocks.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about delicious is the ability to organize all my bookmarks with tags because each new day I seem to come up with new categories for things, so it works well if I just add every possible tag to each bookmark so I can find it again under any circumstance.
I have to admit, I'm still learning about the 'social' part, mostly because I don't know a whole lotta people on delicious - looks like that is changing now!!
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of following feeds. I like to see websites in their native form, and I've cut the ones I follow WAY back. I don't feel uninformed. Plus I can't really see why I'd use anything other than the feeds feature of my browser--I find google reader impossibly ugly (can information have an aesthetic?) but I might mess with it a bit. I don't like the look of Gmail either but it certainly is useful and fast. Maybe I'll get used to it. I signed up for Bloglines to try that too.
ReplyDeleteDelicious seems like such a good idea, but then I never use it. I'm trying it again. I'm so good at remembering urls in my head that it's difficult for me to want to use it. But I can see the benefit in terms of access from multuple computers.
I didn't know that I was social bookmarking. I have been using delicious for about six months. I really like the fact that I can import my bookmarks from both of my workstations. The RSS I am still not too sure about. I subscribed to MSN, and there seems so much. My Delicious id is denisegraham
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jeff: I find Google Reader to be really ugly. I signed up for bloglines to see if it's any less offensive to me. I think my problem with RSS feeds is that I like to classify things into smaller categories--on my home browser I have my most visited websites under their own classified tabs and then I go to them as needed. I don't want work people's blogs sitting around with friend's blogs. But I know that's not the most efficient way, and is probably slightly neurotic. Hopefully Bloglines will help me keep up with my professional reading.
ReplyDeleteI did just set up a delicious account last month (username: nails_barber). Mostly to keep track of all the stuff I want to go back to eventually, but not every day: awesome video archives, spanish language publishers, and artist websites, and knitting patterns, etc.
-Tessa (CLP - Sheraden)
I've also had Google Reader for some time - Kelley did you make me do that some time along the way?? - but have to admit I still just went to my favorite news sites for updated/breaking news but will make a concerted effort to go to the reader instead! I do use the RSS in Outlook (mostly for library-related feeds, i.e. Library Love Fest, As a Matter of Fact/NPR blog) but again they tend to clump there utnil I take an afternoon to weed through them.
ReplyDeleteDelicious will take a bit more work as I tend to use the same tags and that can't be helpful to find things more easily!!
I think all of your comments are really valid and intersting. The thing about all of these tools is that you need to make them work for you - not the other way around. And if they don't work - you select another tool. I am just glad all of you are trying this out and being frank about what works and doesn't work for you!!
ReplyDeleteI completed the tasks for week #3. I added a RSS feed to Google Reader and also to my blog. I created a delicious account ~ socialbutterfly1201. I did these things not to long ago while in graduate school. I deleted everything when class ended. The tasks were not difficult, in fact, it appears that the applications improved from when I last used them.

I RSS'd a couple sites on my home computer and just now set up a delicious account with a site bookmarked. The only trouble is the RSS items are on my home computer and the "My Delicious" & "Save to Delicious" buttons are on my work computer. I have been using "My Yahoo!" for years and still prefer that site. I can save to, or access bookmarks and up to the minute news from any computer.--or did I miss something in the exercise?

Google Reader in use, check. RSS feeds for 23thingers bloggers named some permutation of Meg/Megan/Meghan added, check. RSS feed for NY Times Sunday Book Review added, check.
ReplyDeleteI did have the same problem as Natalie initially where I hit the "Add this feed" link and then realized that was the overly helpful Internet Explorer. *shakes fist in air* "IEEEEEEEE!" So I had to go back and fix that.
I'm still not a fan of RSS feeds. Like several other people here, I like to see posts in their native habitat. I'm not particularly sure that I save much time by scanning something that is harder to concentrate on/read than quickly typing in several series of URLs and easily scanning through them as intended. But I've got weeks more to find out if I'm simply biased. :)
Once I tried to get my reference department to adopt del.icio.us as a bookmarking tool rather than using Favorites on our computers. That died an apathetic death. It's changed a lot since then, and I like the changes a lot. Maybe I'll try to use it just for me this time. (Oh, and I'm megs23things on del.icio.us).
Also, I have a poll on my blog to help solve the gnome hat controversy taht popped up. Votes appreciated. That's megs23things.blogspot.com. (A more accurate name would probably have been megs82whimsies, but there ya go.)

My sympathies to everybody who's struggling with time constraints - I am, too, this week. It's all about finding balance, but since people have been trying to do that for thousands of years, I'm not overly discouraged that I can't always pull it off. ;)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the fact that this keeps coming up means we'll be working on it and addressing it. Thanks for the feedback. This IS overwhelming sometimes, and you're all fabulous for soldiering on.
Charley made a really good point: it IS hard to grasp the milieu of all this - the best way I can think to explain it is, it's trying to put yourself in the mindset of a person who has always had access to these tools and technologies, grown up with them, and considers them a natural part of his/her world. At some point, all our patrons will be that way.
That scares me a little. I sometimes worry I won't be able to keep up. Then I remember I don't have to do it all by myself and feel a little better. :)
Part 1: My del.ici.ous user name is suzywaldojr (my mother-in-law is suzywaldosr.) I am not precisely sure when I would use this...I visit the same websites over and over again from different computers all day and it seems more timely to simply type the web address in. However, since East Liberty is closing soon, it will be nice to export all of my favorites from my main computer. But, I'm still up in the air about the usefulness.
ReplyDeletePart 2: RSS feeds are nifty. I added one to my blog(waldosbooks.blogspot): Powell's Books: Review-A-Day. Since I wanted to do a book blog, I figured something random like CNN wasn't going to cut it. I found some very interesting feeds and some pretty useless ones.
Now, if only I would actually BLOG.

I didn't have any trouble signing up with a newsreader with Google, but I sure had trouble signing up with del.icio.us--I couldn't read the coded numbers and letters they use to make sure I am a real person (!) I did it exactly 7 times--the 6th time I was absolutely sure I was reading the letters correctly, but no, again it came back "did not match", so I asked one of my colleagues to read the letters the seventh time, and we agreed on them, and it worked! I set up a Delicious page (nancybssite), but not sure how often I will use it. I really am not on the internet all that often and don't really have specific areas of interest that I search for on a regular basis. Sometimes, I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks - I find this very confusing and really don't see how or when I will use all these new tools. Not really interested in setting up an RSS at this time.
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying learning new things and will continue with the tutorials. Hopefully this old dog will start to learn some new tricks soon.

I've had a Bloglines account for a while and have managed to even make folders to separate "library" and "personal" feeds.
ReplyDeleteI've also had a delicious account (user name - Beazor) because we roam from computer to computer around here AND I often need to put my storytimes together at home. Having them in one place is great but remembering all of the usernames/passwords is a test of my poor memory!

Both of these items were new to me. I signed up for Google Reader and I think this will probably be a useful tool to see when my favorite sites have new updates. I often go to my bookmarked sites only to find they have not changed, so once I get in the habit of using the Google Reader, I think I will like it. I signed up for a De.licio.us account - my id is 'kanokeli'. I have to explore this a little more to see if I will use it. I can see where being able to see what other users have bookmarked would be interesting, and it would enable the user to perhaps come across a great site that they wouldn't have otherwise, but I'm not sure if I will continue to use it. Time will tell. I am however very glad to have learned about these two new 'things' and look forward to what we are going to learn about next. I really learned a lot this week since I've never used either one in the past!

I chose bloglines for my RRS reader and subscribed to several feeds. After that success, I signed up for a del.icio.us account and added a link (I think!) My username: librarykb. The only computer available to me is at work...for work! Any extended browsing, blogging, or "playing", I must do on my own free time. Looking forward to lots more great things to come --- I'll keep on trying.

Good job, everybody! And thank you for being honest about what is a struggle, and what is coming easily.
ReplyDeleteTwo thoughts:
1) If you're having trouble with one RSS reader, try the other one and see if it works better for you.
2) If you're already very familiar with one of the products (del.icio.us, etc.), try using an alternative - that way you'll be trying something new instead of repeating what you know!
Hang in there, Thing-slingers. Think of it as the Pittsburgh digital marathon - everybody's at different points in the journey, but eventually we all cross the finish line...
I like that you can put all the websites you visit onto one place, but the social bookmarking is even better. Having your bookmarks anywhere is very convenient and I'll probably start using that a lot.

Although I've had a bloglines account for a long time and have subscribed to various feeds, I rarely go there to read them. For this exercise, I did add Shaler's Books and So Much More blog to my feeds.
ReplyDeleteI've set up two delicious accounts in the past. One is for the websites we like to use at the reference desk and the other one serves as a repository of library-related articles for my director. Again, though, I rarely use delicious to find the websites that I've bookmarked. I'm still a creature of habit that uses the favorites in my browser.
I have a my.yahoo.com account that uses RSS feeds, and I've also used a newsfeed program on my mac before (sorry can't remember the name of it at the moment).
ReplyDeleteI just signed up for a delicious account, username tcarter242. I downloaded their tools for firefox and frankly I don't really like having delicious stuff all over my browser window. So I'll probably disable that and just use their web site if I do any follow up use of it.

On the other hand, it is nice having everything come up in one place as opposed to logging on to multiple websites...and the reader would be helpful if working at different computers.
ReplyDeleteMy user name for delicious is herringtonj. I enjoyed learning about social bookmarking since I've heard so much about it. Once again, I'm not sure if I'd use this application since I have my bookmarks all organized by folders/subfolders....very much like the tags in delicious. The major benefit with delicious is the ability to log on at any computer.

I found that signing up for an RSS feed was a bit confusing because the actual steps differed from the ones mentioned in the video clip. I couldn’t figure out how to sign up for feeds using an aggregator, so I tried a few different methods. First I added some feeds to my computer using the Internet Explorer browser, but they disappeared the next day. Then I went to the Bloglines.com, – one of the sites listed in the video- signed up for an account, and added feeds there. I think Bloglines is convenient because it can be accessible on more than one computer .
ReplyDeleteI felt a bit overwhelmed as I signed up for the delicious account because there were so many parts to steps 3 and I wasn’t sure whether or not to install the buttons mentioned in step 2. Once I registered though, I discovered that the site is easy to use.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble reading the warped-looking letters and numbers -- I had to try four times before I got in! The rest wasn't too bad. I've started writing down my user names and passwords because my brain hurts.
ReplyDeleteI too find these exercises a bit time-consuming yet superficial; part of my hurting brain is still thinking of ways to use blogs at work and would like to know more. but wait, we're on to something else. Two somethings.
It's nice knowing what the whippersnappers are doing though. Just remember: We can never let them know or they'll stop using it.
My delicious name is Ann_Litz. As I said, my brain hurts.
I don't think I'm going to be a big fan of the blog feeds, but I do see the value of the delicious accounts. It will be nice to access favorite sites from any computer. How does everyone keep all their user names and passwords straight? Do must people stick to one password for everything? What if I become senile overnight and start saying my passwords out loud? Will people empty my bank account and post mean things on my blog? Just asking.

I signed up for 3 feeds on google reader with no problem. My del.icio.us username is libdhpt. I could see immediately that tagging carefully is important, especially with a lengthy list of bookmarks. The CommonCraft videos are very helpful to me, though I also used the instructions on both the google reader and del.icio.us websites. (I decided to unsubscribe from a feed I didn't want to follow.) I like original websites also, so might use del.icio.us more than google reader.

RSS question: I subscribed to a 23 things blog, and also a feed from a home and garden site. Using Google feed reader, I am presented with more than 100 items for the home/garden feed, a few interesting, most not. I'd like to delete the "junk" and keep the ones I want to read. And then delete them once read. Hmmm. Can anyone tell me how? After I figure that out I'll probably unsubscribe to that feed -- too much information! (I think maybe it has to do with marking them as “Unread” – but I wasn’t always offered that choice.)
ReplyDeleteMy head is aching now too. Went back to that H/G feed to keep trying to figure it out; now there are only 10 items – the other 90+ have vanished. Go figure. And the 23 things blog I subscribed to is somewhere on my work computer, but for now I have no idea where. Oh – and I checked on Google Reader again – now there are 100+ items again. Sigh. I’m going to put this on hold for the day, and hope that del-i-cio-us is more fun! My user name there is pager1.

Meant to add this before my last comment.
ReplyDelete"My thoughts about RSS before I started: I'm trying to figure the why of using RSS also. I'm on information overload, and wonder why I want/need more information landing at my feet. I'm on too many email lists of good info on a variety of issues/topics of importance to me, and often don't have time to read them. Plus I'm constantly visiting diverse websites as the need for info arises. My preference is to go find information when I need it.
There must be a reason rss is so popular - maybe some people have more time?? Well, I'll be setting up a few feeds today and will see how it works. One from 23 things and another one just for fun."
Thanks to my daughter in law I learned to add new blogs to follow on google reader and to add my favorite blog to delicious social bookmarking site

On Monday I attempted to complete these tasks, as I usually do, but found myself more frustrated than usual. It could have been we were busy and I was mostly alone at the desk, or it could have been that I feel that delicious and RSS are useless to me. I dunno.
ReplyDeleteEither way, I have no completed these tasks by joining GooglerReader and creating a delicious account (ReadingRedhead). I am also in better spirits today (despite it being Saturday and I'm at work) and have found that once I gave delicious a second try (monday did not go so well) it's not so bad. I still don't think it's all that useful to me as I know almost all of my favorites urls and those I don't, I google but now they are all together regardless. As for the reader thing, I still despise it mostly because it takes the fun out of looking at various websites to see if/how they have updated. Bah.
Oh well, week 3 conqured!

I'm moving at a snail's pace but I am excited about the glimmers of understanding that are "clicking" for me. I needed to read through everyone's posts here and watch the video clips several times before the lightbulb went on about what an newsreader actually was. I signed up for Google Reader and was surprised to find that our blogspot blog gave access without having to create a new account.(You are all probably saying "duh" but it was news to me!) I also now understand the remark in one of the above posts about prefering to see blogs in their "original" (not sure if that was the exact term used)form. I suscribed to Library Alchemy, and a visually lovely blog I occasionally visit about Indian cooking. Seeing just plain text present itself from both those blogs was a bit of a let down.

ps- I'll eventually get to part B of this assignment.
Ahh....so many bookmarks, so little time. I can relate to lots of the comments here, and have done a bit of musing (yet again) on the assignment on my 23 things blog. Organizing sites that I want to check has its advantages, but sometimes feels like more trouble than it's worth. But in the end, I feel (as others have noted) that we need to tailor these tools to our needs as we become more familiar with them. The assignments are refreshers for those who already know this stuff, and a nice intro. for those who don't. I'm somewhere in the middle, but am enjoying the ride thus far.

I love Del.ic.ious! It's the perfect tool for seperating your bookmarks with a simple keyword. It will be amazing for planning an event, job searching and organizing my favorite procrastination-promoting websites! ReplyDeleteI posted my comments on my blog instead of here.... (June 3, 2009)and have added more thoughts at the end today (June 4).
ReplyDeleteWell, I found the Wiki lesson easy and fun, so have gone back to RSS to see if it got any better. And I think it did, just a bit. The key for me seems to be sticking to one reader (Google is my choice right now) and finding things I really want to read. I seldom go to the same site on a regular basis - made me wonder if RSS was for me. I've picked 2 new feeds (and learned how to unsubscribe to the first 2 I had chosen, which really were not that interesting). One new one is NPR's All Tech Considered, (a blog) which I think will be fun, useful - and mostly short articles! The other is a gardening feed, but I'm skeptical about it. If I don't like it, I can dump it. I'm going to be more particular about choosing future feeds.
I subscribed to several blogs from other 23 things people, and can't decide which I like better - following them on blogspot or getting the feeds.
6/4 Have played with Delicious this morning and think I will like it alot. Their instructions for getting started were confusing - they seemed to insist I click on a button I'd installed in the browser - but I hadn't installed anything. (That seemed to defeat the purpose of being able to use Delicious on any computer.) When I finally figured out how to ignore that instruction, everything went well. I really wish there were a way to organize the bookmarks by importance! Alpha order or date order are not going to be much help if I add a lot of bookmarks, some not often needed. So far I have not been social, not ready to share until I'm more comfortable (plus right now most of my bookmarks are sites referenced from 23 things - which everyone here has!). I did note a few other Delicious accounts I'm curious about, so will probably add them to my network. My account is pager1.
Question - with Google Reader can you get rid of feeds once you've read them or are you stuck with them forever?
Finally getting around to these assignments! I have a Delicious acct. (my son encouraged me to get one a while ago), but had never done anything with it. So...that part's done. Also, I have subscribed to some fun feeds. Loving this whole process!

Revisiting early weeks, trying to see what I've finished and where I need to work. (I've done a little in all the weeks, but not finished or written them up.) I'm rethinking RSS, beginning to get the hang of it, finding some work & some are a waste of time. I still really like All Tech Considered from NPR, found many websites too time consuming for the info they provide.
