This week we are going to look at Downloadable Resources. Allegheny County libraries have a wonderful selection of downloadable books, audio, and video available for free. Questions about our electronic and downloadable collections are sometimes few and far between. How long has it been since you answered the question, “How do you download an eAudio title I found in the catalog?” Hopefully, it wasn’t that long ago. If it was, it’s probably time for a refresher.
Amy Ergler and CLP’s Film & Audio Department created a handy guide to Downloadable Audio and Video. You may have gotten a copy at one of the Technology Playgrounds earlier in the year. It’s been updated and worth revisiting.
- For this week’s exercise, print off a copy and review it (thing #7). You’ll probably want to put a copy near your customer service desk for quick access. To download this document, visit wiki page on week 5.
- After you spend some time learning about the different services, it’s time to download a title (thing #8). You can choose any title from any service. We recommend you begin your search in the catalog. Experiencing library services from our customer’s perspective is always valuable.
- When you’ve completed the two exercises share your experiences in your blog. Post the URL for your blog in the comments section for Week 5. If you haven’t created a blog yet, you can post your experiences in the comments section. In either case, be sure to include your name and the name of your library.
A few notes…
- Some of the downloadable services require you to install software. In some cases this software may already be installed on your work computer. If it is not, call the Help Desk and ask them to grant permissions to that particular machine. If you’re working from a home computer install the software as instructed.
- Be sure to review the help guides that accompany the service you choose.
- If you are not able to successfully download a title tell us why. Our customers may be having the same experience.

On the handy guide to downloadables it says that all you need is a valid Allegheny County library card to access the videos from Overdrive. However, when I selected one from the OPAC and clicked on the link to start downloading it, the next page explains that I need a library card from one of the subscribing libraries listed on that page. Am I missing something? Is there another way that any patron with an Allegheny County library card could have access to these eVideos?

ReplyDeleteJill - good question: there are a few kinds of eVideo rattling around the county. The Overdrive eVideo offerings are available to everybody. Some libraries also have a subscription to MyLibraryDV, which is a separate service limited to their patrons.
ReplyDeleteIf you go into advanced search in the catalog and search for "overdrive" as your keyword, and limit your search to eVideo format, you should come up with titles you can watch...
Hope that helps!

I was able to access an ebook through the public catalogue.
ReplyDeleteI was unable to download a video. I kept getting the "unable to get a license" label. I tried to do the corrections and was led on an endless chase. Innterminable instructions were provided with no opportunity to actually apply them.
This seems fairly typical for me. It is interesting to become aware of new technologies but not many of them actually work for me. Not only am I not acquiring new skills, but also I would be unable to help our customers. (Laurel -- Main/CLP)
I echo the frustrations of many. The titles were really difficult to locate, and it was a pain realizing only after waiting 5 minutes for different programs to install or load that for whatever reason I wasn't "authorized." NetLibrary timed out both while I was trying to turn the page and trying to skip to a particular chapter. Even when it did work, I had to wait so many seconds for each page to load, and then scroll down to read it. (O Kindle where art thou?) I too received the "Get system for DRM from Machine Failed" message for the video program, the neato interface of which tantalized me with how much it had to offer. Too bad it won't work.
ReplyDeleteA question for the powers that be: Is there a page accessible to everyone that lists everything readily available and that will most likely work?
Laurel from CLP said it very well: I was frustrated by this exercise, and don't feel of particular help to patrons interested in it.

Thing #7 was straight-forward. Since I was trying to download a video from within CLP-Main, I was able to check out the video, but could not download it. (Didn't call the Help desk). I was able to get to the download page from home. However, I could see how a customer could be confused between "My Account" and "My Digital Cart". I could not find anything from the "My Account" page to direct me to "My Digital Cart" for the video I had checked out.
Good news: I've figured out how to post the comments from my blog!

I didn't have any problems this time, but I have patrons with problems fairly often. Usually it comes when trying to authenticate the license.
One thing that bothers me is that the mp3 e-audiobooks are not listed in the catalog. Netlibrary's are listed incorrectly as wma files, and it appears that Overdrive's mp3 e-audiobooks are not in the catalog at all.

ReplyDeleteI posted information about the Downloadable Resources on our Library Blog (above) and also on our Facebook. Bayne Library now has copies of the "Handy Guide" at their charge desk available for curious patrons! I also downloaded a book to my MP3 player for my upcoming trip! I'm very excited to be able to inform some of our more technologically saavy patrons about these services and have the knowledge to help them out!

ReplyDeleteWeek 5 of 23 Things - Downloadable Material
Our library computers will not allow access to downloading materials. Jan, our Director, set up a laptop in the office so that the staff could practice. There is nothing like doing it yourself inorder to try to retain the information. Success!
I copied the handy guide to "Downloadable Audio and Video", but I was hoping it was a step by step guide regarding the procedure for downloading material. As you can see, I am a true novice at this.

If it makes anybody feel any better, I, too, had a horrible downloadable experience. I was able to download OverDrive, but every time I tried to download a title, I got a pop-up box saying there was a security problem. Not sure if that was my PC or what.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm curious - if you're at your checkout limit on your card, can you still do downloadables? Or do you have to free up some space on the card first?
See? I'm learning, too. What I'm hoping is that, as we continue to play with these things, we'll be able to report this feedback to vendors and get them to create better products. After all, if we're having problems, imagine what our patrons must be going through...
I'm really bummed, though, because it was a yoga video, and I'd love to be able to download those rather than wait ages for them (of course, there are still plenty of yoga books, thank goodness...)
Oh, and I'm spending catch-up week catching up on your blog posts and comments!

E-books are something my teenage daughter would love to have, however not quite so hip, mom, still loves the feel of real paper & the smell of leather. I'm all for Hulu and past episodes of "Life on Mars"...but it's going to take me a long time to preview the multitude of options out there.

e-books are way cool!!
ReplyDeleteOn a mission to re-read some classics, I chose Bleak House by Dickens. Finding it a bit difficult to follow the plot (Dickens is SO wordy), I headed to CLP - Main to find the Cliff's Notes. No luck. Happy to find the ebook, and now Bleak House is making a bit more sense. Thank you, e-books!
